The V-Up works your six-pack muscles like a crunch. But unlike the crunch, it’s tough. Really tough. That’s because it requires you to activate your hip flexors—a group of muscles on the front of your hips, says David Jack, owner of ActivPrayer in Phoenix, Arizona, and creator of Men’s Health 60-Day Transformation. For most men, these muscles get tight from sitting for hours behind a desk, in the car, or on the couch.
Performing a V-Up snaps them to attention, though. Your hip flexors must pull up your lower body to meet your upper body, all while your torso stays completely straight. It’s hard work, but worth it. The reason: Your hip flexors originate on either side of your pelvis, an area you might consider the ground level of your core. The stronger your hip flexors, the stronger your entire core, says Jack.
